REGISTRATION OF BIRTH AND DEATH
Salient features of the Registration System Under the French Civil Code
During the Ex-french regime the Registration of Birth and Death was done under the French Civil code. The Population of union territory was categorised as “French Nationals” and “Indian Nationals”.
The French Nationals were governed by “French civil code” and the Indian Nationality by the “Decret”. This was in force from the year 1880. As per the old system, it was compulsory to register Births and Deaths.
Registration Hierarchy under the new System
In the union territory of Puducherry, the registration of Births and deaths, the local administration Department has been vested with the responsibilities of implementing the Act 1969. The Director of LAD has been appointed as chief registrar of Births and Deaths of the State. Besides the Deputy Director (Economics and Statistics) in charge of vital Statistical cell has been designated as District Registrar and Additional District Registrar Respectively.
On the receipt of information from the Hospital and registered Institution the Birth, Still Birth or Death the prescribed form the registrar is required to registrar the same in the concerned Register.

• Form No. 1A - Registration of Adopted Child
• Form No. 2 – Registration of Death
• Form No. 3 – Registration of Still Death
Delayed Registration is also permitted under the Registration of Birth and Death Act 1969.
Any clerical error or any omission of any particulars in the entry in the birth or death already registered shall be corrected by the registrar only after conducting an enquiry in the manner prescribed under section 15 of the registration of Birth and Death 1969 and rule 13 of the Pondicherry Registration of Births and Deaths (Amendment) Rule 1987.
Registration of Marriage also conducted in our Municipality according to French code-civil Act.
