Activities and Responsibilities: -

Engineering section is the Civil engineering department having the sanctioned strength of One Executive Engineer, Two Assistant engineers and Seven Junior Engineers. The responsibility of this wing is Construction and maintenance of Infrastructural facilities to the public like Internal and link Roads , Drainage, Markets, Bus stand, Weekly Sandhai, Marriage halls, Community halls, Public toilets, Community toilets, Parks etc., The infrastructural facilities are being carried out by getting Grant-in aid from the Government through the Local Administration department , Town and Country Planning Department, Adhidravidar welfare department,MLA-LAD fund and MP-LAD fund apart from the Municipal own fund of Revenue collection.

Apart from the above this, Engineering section is also issuing Permission for
(i) Cutting roads in municipal jurisdiction for laying Electric cable, Water supply pipe line and Telephone cable to the departments as well as the Private firms and individual public by collecting required road restoration charges.
(ii) Issuing No Objection Certificate to the Karaikal planning Authority for Construction of Building to the Individual or firm after collecting necessary development charges and Vacant land tax.
(iii) Issuing Building material stacking permission after collecting necessary charges.
(iv) Issuing necessary permission for erection of Pandal and Shamiana.

Permission for cutting of Roads:

Whenever application is received for permission to cut the Municipal Roads, Platforms field inspection is to be done to assess the damages that may have caused to the roads and charges are collected proportionately from the applicant. Municipal authorities are also competent to insist for payment of past arrears of Property Tax etc, before the permission is granted.

Application is to be submitted to the Executive Engineer, Karaikal Municipality.Permission will be given within a fortnight after payment of Road cutting charges.The rate of Road cutting charges per square metre are as follows: -

Earthern Road - Rs.87/-per sq.m.
WBMRoad - Rs.674/-per sq.m.
BTRoad - Rs.932/-per sq.m.
C.C.Road - Rs. 1,661/-per sq.m.

For new roads within one year of construction 2 times the above charges will be collected. This charge will be revised from time to time.

Permission for Stacking of Building Materials on Road side:

The application is to be submitted to the Commissioner, Karaikal Municipality. The following documents should be attached with the application: -
i) Attested Photostat copy of the permission issued by the Karaikal Planning Authority.
ii) Attested Photostat copy of the sale deed document.
The site will be inspected within five working days and necessary permission will be issued within the next ten working days after payment of charges by the applicant. At Rs 15 per sqm per day.

Erection of Pandal/ Shamiana:

The permission for erection of Pandhal/ Shamiana will be issued following the application received in plain paper from the Public or firm after collecting the following charges.
i) For one pole per week – Rs. 75/-
ii) For Coconut leaves Pandhal per week- Rs. 10/-
iii) For Shamiana per week- Rs. 7.50/-
